Today, Spotify processes more than a billion payments annually. Our payments’ vision is that money flows seamlessly, efficiently and safely across the Spotify community, so that users can easily pay for products and services from Spotify and creators, anywhere across our platform, using the payment products they prefer and creators can get paid efficiently as they monetise across the increasingly diverse range of opportunities on the Spotify platform.

The Global Payments team is responsible for leading the growth, stability and strategic direction of Spotify’s approach to payments globally. We act as central in-house payment specialists who support the rest of Spotify by setting up, managing and optimizing payments across the company. Our payments platform supports a multitude of business lines such as Premium, Ad Studio, Podcast Advertising, Live ticketing and more. We partner closely with both internal (e.g. Product, R&D, Legal, Finance, Customer Service, Subscriber Growth) and external stakeholders (e.g. PSPs, Payment Networks, APM providers, Issuers, and regulators) to provide the global payments service that enables our fans, creators and advertisers to pay and be paid.

Payments Strategy and Innovation

The team is responsible for the development and execution of Spotify’s long-term payments strategy, enabling the transition from a Premium subscription payments service to a pan-Spotify platform across a range of pay-in/pay-out transactional use cases for consumers, creators and advertisers.The team leads the exploration of key payment innovations including blockchain/crypto/stablecoins/CBDC & DeFi, Open Banking & A2A payments, In-App & Platform Payments, micropayments and embedded finance.

Payments Strategy and Planning

The team is responsible for the development of Spotify’s 18-24 month strategic plan, overseeing the planning, prioritization and delivery of payment initiatives to ensure the successful execution of our payments strategy. This involves collaborating with external partners and global teams across Spotify as well as responding to external payment trends and regulation to define our strategic priorities and key initiatives.

Partnerships, Payment Operations and Global Optimization

The team manages today’s payments business, in line with Spotify’s business goals and payment strategy. We work directly with 20+ payment partners to enable payments across Spotify. In addition, the team ensures Spotify has integrated and established operational processes for accepting, making and managing payments. Finally, optimizing payments across all use cases is paramount to enable Spotify’s growth ambitions, at global scale.

Payments Fraud and Analytics

The team is tasked with making payments safe while maintaining a seamless and efficient user experience for Spotify’s users. It implements and maintains machine learning models and rule sets to screen transactions for fraud, and enforces actions against fraudulent actors. The team leverages sophisticated techniques on large sets of data to create practical business insights and recommendations that inform our payments optimisation strategy. Lastly, it interacts with other areas of the business to assess and mitigate fraud risks of new initiatives, in addition to proactively screening for new and emerging trends to fraud prevention in the industry.
